Slow progress

Classic, Custom, Motorcycle Add comments

There are ups and downs in the garage. The problem isn’t really the work that needs to be done but the tools I don’t have. Thinking you can rebuild a bike with a basic tool set is madness. The lack of torque wrenches, jacks, pliers and plenty of other things I don’t have names for are making for slow progress.
It is now decided that instead of making an entirely new subframe, I’ll just modify my existing one. If that end up looking terrible, then we’ll see.
What worries me is the wiring of electrics. That actually scares the bejesus out of me. I spent a full ten minutes just looking at the wires for the rear turn signals before cutting them.

    Hey there,
Found your bike through a google search. I recently picked up a ‘76 r75/6 from an older guy who stopped riding it 10+ years ago, and at the moment it looks very much like yours (taken apart, etc.) I will be “customizing” (for lack of resources or desire to “restore” it), have already ordered a seat and have made some component changes (signal lights, installed new battery, removed full fairing, painted fenders and tank flat black.. among other things). Currently waiting for delivery of a tank re-sealer kit, and need to swap out speedometer from KPH to MPH. Afraid to look at the carbs, and hoping I can just change the oil and run with it… wishful thinking probably. Was thinking of going to 2 into 1 pipes, but for now will probably re-paint the current pipes/mufflers… maybe wrap the head pipes (yes, the previous owner painted them and it’s flaking off). Well, enough rambling – just thought I’d say hi.

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hey Rob,

great to hear from you. Thanks for checking in and telling about your bike.
It’s funny that once you start modifying/restoring there’s no end to it. Your plan of just doing this or that is soon extended to include bits that work fine but while in the flow of customising you just keep going. Kinda charming actually.
The goal for now is making it rideable before spring.
Let me know about your progress.

    /Jens
